The pretty town of Argenteuil can be just glimpsed on the horizon. In the 19th century it was a popular destination for Sunday trips and pleasure boating, being on the banks of the river Seine, and on the train line between Paris and Rouen. Monet acquired a boat in Argenteuil, fitting it out as a floating studio, in which he worked rapidly to capture the fleeting effects of light as it reflects on the water's surface.
