The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to the King Solomon Art Print
Striking in its complexity, The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to the King Solomon is widely regarded as the most ambitious composition that Fontana ever created. Its subject matter is identified as the meeting of biblical rulers King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba by a Latin inscription painted on a stone step in the foreground. In Fontana's interpretation of the biblical theme, a group of women painted in full length and arranged in a row like an antique frieze dominated one side of the composition. Adorned in sumptuous textiles with striking lace collars, and with the aid of an African servant or enslaved person, they carry offerings of gifts and jewellery to honour the royalty in their presence.
