The Supper at Emmaus is visible in the left background, seemingly overheard by a Moorish kitchen maid, who pauses in her work as though aware of this event. This implies that salvation is possible for her: many Moors converted to Christianity in Spain. This painting was created by Velázquez in Seville at the age of eighteen or nineteen and is considered to be his earliest known picture. It is a bodegóne, combining still life and a genre in a kitchen or tavern setting. Velazquez captures beautifully the textures of the glazed and burnished vessels, mortar and pestle.
