A child in ragged clothing has come from a cottage to take water from a brook. She stands forlornly, holding a broken earthenware pitcher in one hand and a dog in the other. During the 1780s, Gainsborough painted almost twenty 'fancy pictures' of rustic figures, often children, set in Arcadian, imaginary landscapes. These emotive works struck a deep chord with the British public, appealing to the contemporary taste in art, literature and gardening for picturesque rural idylls, at a time when the poetry of William Wordsworth was gaining popularity.

National Gallery of Ireland Art Prints are the perfect way to have your own masterpiece.
