The Impressionist Claude Monet (1840-1926) began planting a spectacular water garden in 1893 by his home in Giverny, France, which was to become the focus of his later works. 'The Water-Lily Pond' (1899), from the collection of London's National Gallery, has become one of the best known examples of this period.

The detail featured in this scarf from Fox & Chave shows close up the waterlilies floating on the surface of the water with reflections of the trees behind. The combination of the horizontal waterlilies and vertical trees gives a sense of tranquility, a device learned from the artist's study of Japanese wood block prints.
