Kawase Hasui (Japanese, 1883–1957)
Fuji in Clear Weather after Snow from Tago Bay, 1932
As simply elegant as classic haiku, Kawase Hasui’s artwork often features seasonal scenes of rural Japan. With the support of publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, Hasui’s original watercolours were made into woodblock prints that became exceptionally popular. Late in life, Hasui was honoured as a Living National Treasure by the government of Japan.
