Ellen Hutchins: Botanist of Bantry Bay
Discover the life and times of a remarkable young woman from Ballylickey, Bantry Bay, West Cork - Ellen Hutchins. In just eight years of botanising, sadly cut short by her death aged 59, Hutchins discovered many new species, and made a significant contribution to the understanding of seaweeds, lichens, mosses and liverworts.
Ellen was an accomplished botanist, a talented botanical artist, an endearing letter writer, as well as a devoted sister and daughter, and a kind friend. Her story is relevant to all those with an interest in botany, heritage, the history of women in science, and the place: Bantry Bay and West Cork.
Published in July 2019, this small volume provides a fascinating introduction to Ellen’s life and work, and is well illustrated with photographs of the Bantry Bay area (past and present), along with images of the plants that Ellen studied and her exquisite drawings and specimens.
