After completing his education, he began working as a flight attendant, which allowed him to travel the world. However, he regretted not having studied at university. Back in Dublin, he began writing for various media outlets, which had always been his dream.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis career as a novelist took off with the publication of his first book,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eLong Lankin\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e(1970). With\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe Book of Evidence\u003c\/em\u003e, he was a finalist for the Booker Prize (1989), an award he would win in 2005 with the book\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eThe Sea\u003c\/em\u003e. He has also been awarded the Frank Kafka Prize (2005) and the Austrian Prize for European Literature (2013). In 2014, he received the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature.
