Leech convalesced from typhoid in Concarneau, in a hospital run by the Sisters of the Holy Ghost, whose garden was the setting for this luminous picture. The model for the novice is Elizabeth Saurine, the artist's first wife. She glides past the viewer attired in a white lace habit, symbolic of her becoming a bride of Christ. Its delicate shades reflect the colours of the leaves and petals of the lilies, a symbol of purity.
