Johannes Vermeer specialised in genre scenes, particularly of women in domestic settings. The lady in this painting appears to have thrown down a letter that she has received, as well as her letter-writing manual. With such unexceptional content Vermeer had fashioned one of his most sublime works. Light filters through the window, giving a statuesque calm to the centrally placed maid and transforming the lady's dress into a blur that echoes her inner turmoil. Behind her hangs a painting of The Finding of Moses; a reminder to trust in Divine Will. Muted colour contributes to the sense of a distilled moment.
