The medieval Danish ballad 'Helellil and Hildebrand' tells of Hellelil's ill-fated love for her bodyguard Hildebrand, whose death is ordered by her father. Burton depicts the moment of the couple's final meeting, before Hildebrand goes to meet his death. Their averted eyes and tender embrace are poignant yet understated, implying the inevitable tragedy to follow. Burton's interest in the art and legend of the middle ages was shared with the Pre-Raphaelites, whom he was associated with in London. Burton chose 'Hellelil and Hildebrand' specifically as the poem had been translated from Danish by his friend Whitley Stokes.
