A Cottage Garden was painted at Uffington, near Oxford, where Osborne passed the summer and autumn of 1888. Such a detailed evocation of flowers is unusual for him. Having come under the influence of Realist and Impressionist painting in France, Osborne became attracted by the notion of painting outdoors, directly from the motif, and of 'truth' to nature. Such an approach is apparent in the freshness of his treatment of the lilies and vegetation here.
