The Taking of Christ Canvas Print
The Taking of Christ Canvas Print
This powerful work was painted at the height of Caravaggio's fame, and the theatrical light and realistically observed figures are representative of his mature style. The drama reaches an emotional pitch as Judas kisses and identifies Christ, who does not resist his arrest by the soldiers, menacingly clad in shining black armour. The fleeing disciple on the left is St John the Evangelist, whose face is united with those of Jesus and Judas by moonlight.
