'The Wild Swans', from Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales (1838), tells of a king's eleven sons and one daughter, Eliza, who were banished by their stepmother. The sons turned into swans and carried Eliza away on a net woven from willow and rushes. In this lyrical illustration, Eliza floats on the net, drawn along by the swans. An inscription on the back reads: ' "The Wild Swans"/ The whole day they flew/ onward through the air'. This drawing belongs to a series made by Harry Clarke for a deluxe edition of Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen published by Harrap in 1916.
