A man writes the letter that we see being read in the pendant-painting Woman Reading a Letter, c.1664-66. The table on which this man writes is covered with a sumptuous Persian carpet with a red field, a blue border and long fringe. The gentleman is elegantly attired in black silk with ample white linen at his collar and sleeves. His beribboned black hat hangs on the back of a red upholstered chair. The imported rug, silver inkwell and other furnishings suggest the male sphere of public display.
