The Irish stained glass artist and illustrator Harry Clarke was given his first major book illustration commission in 1913 by George Harrap and Company, prominent London publishers. This prestigious job entailed the production of forty full-page illustrations for Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales. The book was published in 1916 to great acclaim.The Nightingale is one of a group of ten original watercolours from this series, acquired by the Gallery in 2008.
